Prologue

The "Heart of Europe" on the Banks of the Danube

On the map of Europe, Austria stands out as a unique nation. It is not only the "heart" linking Eastern and Western Europe, but also synonymous with music, art and refined lifestyle. The snow-capped Alps and blue waters of the Danube nurture the grace of this land; Mozart, Freud and Kafka endow it with profound thoughts and boundless creativity.

Yet Austria’s beauty extends far beyond landscapes and art. It is a country where traditional craftsmanship and modern technology are seamlessly integrated. Here, "Made in Austria" is more than a label; it is a conviction — representing dedication to precision, reverence for quality, and commitment to sustainable development. Home to merely nine million people, this country has nurtured countless hidden champions in niche sectors. With its distinctive niche innovation strategy, it quietly underpins the backbone of the world’s high-end manufacturing industry.

Origins

A Success Story Spanning More Than Half a Century

The bond between Austria and China stretches far back in time.

Back in 1956, the moment the first non-governmental trade agreement was signed, the seed of Sino-Austrian economic and trade cooperation was quietly sown. In 1966, the Federal Economic Chamber of Austria, with remarkable foresight, opened its first office in China in Beijing. This vision laid the cornerstone for the flourishing partnership that followed. The official establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971 elevated this relationship to a new historical phase.

For more than half a century, numerous Austrian enterprises have brought cutting-edge technology and innovative spirit to China. From the first LD steelmaking plant in Taiyuan, Shanxi, to the power plant project in Majitang, Hunan, they are not merely technology exporters, but deep participants and witnesses of China’s modernisation drive. Today, around 650 Austrian companies have established a presence in China, with investments exceeding 6.3 billion euros. Together, they continue to write this mutually beneficial “success story”.

Today

From "Friendly Strategic Partners" Toward a Future of Boundless Possibilities

In 2018, China and Austria established a “Friendly Strategic Partnership”, injecting new-era connotations into bilateral cooperation. Amid global climate change, energy transition and digital transformation, Sino-Austrian cooperation is unfolding with unprecedented broad prospects.

China is steadfastly advancing high-quality development and green transition — areas where Austrian enterprises hold core strengths. From advanced manufacturing and green technology to smart cities and life sciences, Austrian technologies align closely with China’s development needs. As Chinese enterprises go global and seek cooperation in third-party markets, Austria, as a bridgehead in Central and Eastern Europe with world-renowned expertise across niche sectors, stands as one of the most reliable partners.

The future holds boundless opportunities. They lie within smarter, more efficient Industry 4.0 solutions; within green technologies that make cities more liveable and sustainable; and also within Chinese consumers’ pursuit of high-quality, personalised lifestyles.

A Microcosm

When Austrian Craftsmanship Enters Chinese Homes

This cross-border in-depth cooperation ultimately comes down to the daily lives of thousands of households. Weitzer Parkett serves as a vivid microcosm.

A market leader in Austria’s solid wood parquet flooring sector, Weitzer Parkett traces its origins back to 1831. Nearly two centuries of family heritage have elevated its understanding of timber to a philosophical level. At its headquarters in Weiz, every floorboard is far more than simple wood processing; it represents the culmination of intelligent system solutions:

It can be maintenance-free, allowing you to savour the warmth of solid wood amid busy modern life. It can be health-focused, safeguarding every breath of your family with the strictest standards. It can be self-heating, perfectly compatible with underfloor heating to bring warmth rising from your feet to your heart. It can also be circular, embedding reverence for nature into the product lifecycle and living out the innate environmental DNA of Austrian enterprises.

Back in 2009, when sustainability was yet to become a mainstream keyword, Weitzer Parkett took the lead to withdraw from tropical timber operations. It sources wood only from sustainably managed forests in Central and Eastern Europe. Its German Blue Angel eco-certification stands as the highest recognition for this ecological commitment.

In Weitzer Parkett, we witness all the shining traits of Austrian enterprises: reverence for traditional craftsmanship, dedication to technological innovation, and commitment to social responsibility. It does not merely sell flooring; it conveys a nature-rooted, future-oriented way of life.

From Understanding to Trust, from Cooperation to Win-Win

Dr. Andreas Helfrich-Schkarbanenko, Austrian Ambassador to China, once offered this heartfelt message: “Numerous sincere personal friendships lay the solid foundation for our bilateral partnership… I wish to express my sincere gratitude to all who have contributed to this endeavour.” He also emphasised that the dual commemorative milestones for both countries in 2026 will surely serve as “a precious opportunity for deepening exchanges comprehensively, from people-to-people contacts to high-level dialogues.”

As the ambassador remarked, personal friendship forms the cornerstone of cooperation, and mutual trust fuels our progress. When we gaze upon the exquisite grain on Weitzer Parkett flooring, what we see is not merely the growth rings of timber, but the profound accumulation of nearly 70 years of Sino-Austrian economic and trade ties. It is the tree of friendship nurtured by countless practitioners through sincerity and professionalism.

In the years ahead, we look forward to more such Austrian craftsmanship entering Chinese households. We also hope that more Chinese enterprises will use Austria as a bridge to reach the wider world.

For a true partnership begins with understanding, grows through trust, and culminates in mutual success.
